- Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children aged 1–14.

- 2 out of 3 drowning victims never intended to be in the water.
- Most drownings occur within 10–30 feet of safety.
The American Red Cross finds that:
Nearly 50% of all people have had a near-drowning experience.
The reasons connecting these findings are complex and include a “mixed-bag” of:
- An inability to swim,
- Being unaware of drowning danger,
- Personal fear of water,
- Cultural attitudes toward water,
- Socio-economics, and
- A lack of drowning prevention education.
DROWNPROOF studies each piece of this “mixed-bag” to analyze and explain the reasons how and why people drown.
